Q: Can Complete beginners join?
A: Yes. Many complete beginners have enjoyed their introduction to Fine Woodworking at Hill Picket Studio and many have returned to complete new projects and learn new techniques. Participants come from all over Ireland and from across Europe.
Q: Do I need prior woodworking experience or my own tools?
A: Beginner-level projects require no previous experience. Tools are provided. Advanced students tend to build up their own tool-kit and enjoy using their own tools.
Q: How are classes structured (group or 1on1)?
A: Options vary. Please see class schedule for group session details. Private group sessions for team or family outings welcomed on off schedule dates welcome. Also, one-to-one sessions for Masterclasses can also be arranged. Generally group class sizes are 4 to 5 persons.
Q: How are the classes structured?
A: Projects are organised into lessons, typically progressing from basic techniques to advanced skills. Classes are non-prescriptive…… so there may be others working on more advanced projects during your first visit. This can help to make the day more interesting. The classes are non judgemental.
Q: How long does it take to complete a project?
A: The Beginners project will be completed in one session. More complex projects will take more than one session. Projects are self-paced. You can complete them at your own speed.
Q: Is wood provided?
A: Generally yes— but materials are always extra. For example the Beginners Keepsake Box materials cost € 25.00. Expect to budget extra for hardwoods, prep and finishes depending on personal choice. However, if you have a wood you wish to use, bring it, and we can assess its suitability. Bear in mind there will be a fee for any preparation of materials required in the workshop.
Q: Can I bring my own project ideas?
A: Absolutely, but students must already have the skills required for completing the project and be prepared to engage in the design process if necessary.
Q: What new techniques can I learn?
A: If you have some previous introductions to Fine Woodworking, we can begin to explore the use of veneers, how to make inlays, bending wood and more.
Safety & Requirements
Q: Are safety orientations required?
A: Yes, there is a safety briefing before using hand tools or power tools. PPE is available for those using tools. Visitors are not permitted to use floor standing machinery.
Q: What should I wear to class?
A: Opt for fitted clothing without loose parts, closed-toe shoes – open toe sandals are not permitted in the workshop; tie back long hair, remove jewellery— Safety comes first
Scheduling & Logistics
Q: Where do the classes take place?
A: At Hill Picket Studio near Avoca village in beautiful County Wicklow.
Q: What are class times and duration?
A: Schedules vary click here for class schedule. Class hours typically; Saturdays 9:40 am–5 pm and Wednesday & Thursday mornings 09.30 - 1.00 pm Tea / Coffee and biscuits are provided during rest periods. For all day sessions, please bring along your packed lunch. There are no shops nearby.
Q: How much do the classes cost?
Saturday sessions cost € 150.00 per session attended. A 50% Booking deposit is required Wednesday and Thursday sessions cost € 40.00 per session attended with a minimum of 4 sessions per month. This amount is payable in advance and is non refundable. Materials are always extra and vary from project to project.
Q: What’s the cancellation policy?
A: We require a minimum notice of 14 days for refunds. Following that deposits are be non-refundable
